POSITION Product Development & Technical Service Manager

Job Summary:

The Product Development and Technical Services Manager - Whey works in conjunction with the whey teams on research, new product development, extensions of existing product lines, applications for products and optimization of products and processes related to the production of whey based ingredients.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities: 

• Research the feasibility of both new product/process development and extensions to existing lines; working with the help of R&D and whey production teams to develop/implement projects from pilot scale to plant trials. 

• Work closely with R&D to develop new product ideas, markets, concepts and manufacturing methods of value-added whey products; actively providing guidance for pilot production of new products.

• Provide technical service support to whey production plants.

• Work in conjunction with the operational excellence team and the regional operational management teams to maximize plant profitability by monitoring plant efficiencies, utilizing best raw materials, meeting target compositional results, maximizing yields and improving overall quality of products.

• Work with plant production and quality assurance groups in the complaint research/resolution and corrective action process; analyzing all quality attributes of new and existing products and seeking solutions related to quality defects.

• Assist with growth plans; working with others within the organization to develop next step growth plans for products and facilities.

• Partner with finance to prepare product costing for new products and processes based on raw material and manufacturing costs to ensure profitability.

• Network with available resources to stay abreast of new technologies within the dairy industry; collaborating with customers, vendors, universities and experts in the food processing industry to formulate ideas and develop new products and processes.

• Assist in managing and prioritizing product development projects and research initiatives.

• Engage in the strategic planning process by assisting in the development of the product development tactical plan and delivering on tactical plan goals.

• Manage the new product development process, from pilot scale through commercialization, and facilitate the commercialization of new products in the whey production plants, ensuring full validation and operational readiness.

• Create technical documents to support operations along with product and process development such as experimental designs, project reports, project charters, operational plans, Gantt Charts, mass balances, etc.

• Ensure full technical transfer of new products, new processes and new equipment into operations.

• Travel domestically and internationally as needed to provide technical support for operations.

• Prepare detailed reports for product development trials.

• Provide accurate technical information to quality assurance on new products to ensure compliance with regulatory bodies.

• Direct internal product research programs, potentially with several research projects running simultaneously.

• Collaborate with other R&D personnel on joint research projects.

• Direct technical training for employees and deliver technical presentations at meetings, seminars and conferences both within and outside the organization.

• Manage and assist operations as needed to produce high value whey products to meet sales demand.

• Develop and maintain a format for reporting necessary information to the appropriate audiences within the organization.

• Provide leadership, guidance, mentorship and support to direct and dotted line reports.

• Assist and promote a safe working environment driving zero losses and actively promote a culture of quality and food safety.

• Respond to common inquiries or complaints from customers, regulatory agencies or members of the business community.

• Effectively present information to top management, customers, vendors and public groups.

• Stop any observed unsafe acts, and obey facility safety rules and procedures.

• Correct or report any observed safety hazards.

Education Required:

• Bachelor’s Degree in Food Science, Dairy Science, Chemistry, or related field required.

• Master’s Degree preferred.

• Equivalent combination of education and/or experience may be considered.


Experience Required:

• Minimum five (5) years product development, technical services or R&D experience.

• Minimum five (5) years of experience within dairy industry preferred.

• Experience with analyzing, interpreting and understanding common scientific and technical journals, financial reports and legal documents.

• Experience with interpreting analytical and production data.

• Experience with pilot plant operations and management.

• Familiarity with key vendors providing functional ingredients used within the food processing industry.

• Knowledge of experimental design.

• Intermediate computer skills with Microsoft Excel, Power Point, Word, Outlook and field-specific software.

• Effective formal presentation skills, commands attention, and can manage group process during the presentation.

• Ability to manage several complex projects simultaneously while working under pressure to meet deadlines.

• Communicate effectively both verbally and in writing with executives, managers, colleagues and individuals inside and outside the organization.

• High level of interpersonal skills to handle sensitive and confidential situations and documentation.

• Demonstrate strong organizational and time management skills.

• Accurately scopes out length and difficult of tasks and projects, sets objectives and goals, breaks down work into the process steps, develops schedules and assignments, anticipates and adjusts for problems or roadblocks, measures performance against goals, evaluates results.
