Establishes quality requirements in collaboration with Technical Services, R&D, Sales/Marketing, customers and suppliers on new and existing products. Establishes Standard Operating Procedures for all functions in the Business Unit in collaboration with Technical Services, Human Resources and other resources. Ensures team members are trained, understand requirements and meet requirements throughout production process.  Requires team members to follow all provisions of operating instructions and Good Manufacturing Practices.  Conducts, and assists others in conducting, investigations to determine causes of quality defects.  Monitors quality of output and takes appropriate action, including shutdown of process, to prevent or limit production of off-grade material.  Interface with other plants on packaging issues and be the focal point for all new and redesigned packaging.
Maintains a safe and productive environment for the Business Unit on all three shifts which includes:  thoroughly train new employees on how to work safely, recognize hazards, understand safety rules that apply and consequences of non-compliance; ensure necessary safety equipment and protective devices are provided/used; enforce safety rules; maintain an effective self-inspection program for safety; take prompt corrective action when unsafe conditions or acts are identified; investigate all accidents and develop corrective action when unsafe conditions or acts are identified; investigate all accidents and develop corrective action; ensure all injuries are reported promptly; conduct monthly safety meetings for all employees; actively participate in monthly safety training; participate in monthly behavioral observation program; give full support to all safety procedures and activities; fulfill all training requirements (e.g. Hazard Communication, Lock-out/Tag-out); assign safety lock-out devices to personnel; in emergencies, direct control efforts of employees and order their safe evacuation.
Manages the Business Unit to meet established cost standards for use of raw materials, utilities, labor, and supplies.  Through continuous improvement process, identifies most efficient use of labor, equipment and materials; ensures members are trained and follow requirements.  Champions cost reduction effort for assigned Business Unit.  Develop the direct costs budget and the overhead budget for the Business Unit and forecasts changes throughout the year.  Ensures all employees are trained to understand the impact of their efforts against Business Unit costs.
Through team effort with Business Unit Supervisors and in collaboration with Factory Services and other resources, develops production goals on annual basis and measures against those goals throughout the year.  Through team effort, assigns personnel, equipment and materials to achieve goals.  Designs and arranges for flow of raw material and finished product.  Works with the Maintenance Department to establish and maintain equipment (e.g. preventive maintenance schedule, repairs).  Develops quality-at-the-source measures throughout process and develops the team problem solving skills necessary to continuously improve process, equipment, downtime, etc.  Monitors progress and makes appropriate adjustments.
Applies a systematic approach to planned change in a long-range effort to improve the Business Unit's ability to cope with change in its external environment and increase its internal problem-solving capabilities.  Organization development efforts address both process goals (achieving improvements in such things as communication, interaction, and decision making among the Business Unit members, focusing on how well people work together) and outcome goals (achieving improvements in task performance, focusing on what is actually accomplished through individual and group efforts.)  Position is accountable for:  creating an open problem-solving climate; supplementing formal authority with that of knowledge and competence; moving decision-making to points where relevant information is located; building trust and maximizing collaboration among individuals and groups; allowing people to exercise self-direction and self-control at work; improve the working relationship between Maintenance and Operations; initiate and complete and ongoing training program for the Hayssen operators and back-ups.  Human resource management efforts include:  interviewing/evaluating/hiring prospective employees; evaluating performance; facilitating the performance improvement process; establishing a climate conducive to positive employee relations; training, motivating, encouraging and developing employees.  Complies with all legal requirements (e.g. EEO/AA, Wage & Hour, ADA, FMLA.)
The nature of this position requires the ability to create positive working relationships and to involve others in working collectively toward the achievement of department and plant goals.  Through proper coaching, training, counseling and recognition, this individual creates a focus for others in creating and maintaining a Total Quality Management system.

Education and Experience
The position requires a Bachelors Degree in Business, Food Technology or related field, or equivalent related experience with five to seven years experience in food processing.
